GLENELG, MD — On Saturday mornings May through November, dog owners' precious pups have the chance to frolic leash-free in a half-acre fenced dog park at K-9 and Coffee Lounge in Glenelg. Owner Kelvin G. Abrams launched the business in 2008 as an option for his clients at Tiki's Playhouse Doggy Daycare to enjoy coffee while they watch their dogs play leash-free on the playground. "Dogs exercise and socialize in the playground while their humans relax with coffee, tea, latte or espresso on Saturday mornings," Abrams told Patch. Customers love the beverages so much that the coffee service is available at K-9 and Coffee Lounge Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to noon. The lounge also is open Tuesday through Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 8 p.m. Weather permitting, the dog park is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays for just $10 per dog with proof of up-to-date vaccines. It can be found at 3830 Ten Oaks Road. They offer organic coffee and tea from Orinoco, lattes and espresso, plus more than 70 brands of bourbon and whiskey, as well as beer, wine and cocktails. "We proudly serve Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey - made at Nearest Green Distillery. Nearest Green is the black man who taught a young Jack Daniel how to make whiskey," Abrams said. K-9 and Coffee Lounge also added food options that include Detroit-style pizza from Chef Craig Falk of Big Softy. There are a slate of special events offered at the establishment, including one June 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. that features Horse Soldier Bourbon crafted by a team of retired Green Berets who were among the first U.S. Special Forces deployed after 9/11. Their mission became the inspiration for the movie 12 Strong. "This isn’t just a tasting—it’s a tribute. We invite you to raise a glass to the fallen soldiers, the brave who served quietly and the unknown heroes who now need our help. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Third Option Foundation, supporting CIA paramilitary operatives and their families in times of need," Abrams said. While the majority of customers hail from Glenelg and Columbia, a good amount come from all across Howard County. "I love the small town feel of Glenelg," Abrams said.
